Feurio Questions & Answers - Feurio! CD-Writer
general questions:
Which CD-Rs should I use?
Question: I have heard that there are differences between various CD-Rs -
which ones should I use?
Answer:There is no general answer to this - if you look in newsgroups for
example, there are lengthy discussions on the subject. It really depends a lot
on the burner, the burner's firmware and the write speed as well as the playback
devices.
CD-RS which can be burned extremely well on one burner and then run on every
player, may also be burned without error on another burner (or even using other
firmware) but then tend to e.g. jump while being played.
E.g. this could be seen well with TEAC burners: Older versions of the firmware
couldn't write well on blue CD-Rs, there were sometimes even write errors. The
problem was then completely solved with a new version of the firmware.
Basically the only thing I can say is this:
- I personally have found the blue CD-Rs work best
in my experience (e.g. Verbatim®, TDK®, ...), have had most problems
with the green ones. Exception: With some light-blue CD-Rs (No-Name) I also had
bad experience.
THIS IS JUST MY PERSONAL EXPERIENCE _ IT MAY BE QUITE DIFFERENT WITH OTHER WRITERS
ETC.!
- With "No-Name" CD-Rs you can be lucky or unlucky (you don't say...) So anyone
to whom quality is important should either buy the expensive "brand-name CD-Rs"
or carry out extensive testing.
- A test criteria for me is to hold the CD-R up against a bright light source.
CD-Rs which let too much light through should be treated with suspicion, even
though this is not necessarily negative; if however you can see holes in the
coating while doing this (i.e. it looks like a "starry night"), you would be
better off avoiding this CD-R.
- Whenever you buy a new make of CD-R: Either just buy e.g. 10 to start with
and then test them extensively (i.e. in particular play them back on DIFFERENT
CD players - errors often only occur with certain players). When doing so, in
particular you should try filling the CD completely - errors sometimes only occur
at the end of the CD.
Or: Agree a right to return them with the shop. Of course "used" CD-Rs can not
be returned, but there will not be many shops which object to taking CD-Rs back
in their original packaging (although maybe only complete packs). I myself have
never had any problems returning packs (still sealed) to exchange them for other
CD-Rs - not with "local shops" or electrical wholesalers.
