Indexes
(As you probably know) a CD is divided into several tracks.
A track again can be divided into indexes.
The track indexes start at 0 and can count up to 99.
Nowadays the track indexes (apart from index 0 and are barely used! E. g. some
classical music recordings use index marks to mark the single movements within
a track.
Some CD-Players can access indexes directly.
Index-0 has a special meaning.
Index-0 contains only silence and represents the break between the tracks.
On the CD the starting position of each track is stored in the CD's directory
( the "Table of Contents), though this starting
position actually is the position of index 1. So when selecting a track directly
the CD-Player will skip index-0 (and will directly start with index .
The index-0 (and with it the index-0 silence) is only played when the CD is played
continuously!
Some CD-Players even allow to skip the index-0 silence.
Therefore many CD-Players display index 1 of a track as position 0, the index
0 area will usually be marked by negative values (Feurio!® CD-Player works
just the same).
Index 1 is followed by the "normal" samples of the track.
For special purposes the index-0 area can be written with music data as well
- see "Index-0 music".
