Feurio Questions & Answers - Feurio! CD-Writer
general questions:
The recorder buffer size given by Feurio!
is incorrrect!
Question: According to the advertising/product specification and information
under "device properties / extended properties" my CD writer has got a buffer
area of e.g. 2 MB; however according to "Device properties / recorder properties"
and the display while burning, it only has 1148 K Buffer area. Why doesn't Feurio!
use the whole buffer area?
Answer: The size given by the vendor is the physical size of the memory -
the actual USABLE size of the memory as a general rule is smaller as a) the writer
needs part of the memory for internal purposes and b) the data may already be
"precoded" in the buffer .
I passed this question on to the Yamaha-Support. The answer from Yamaha:
"The size of DRAM is 2 MB, however the area for the host is 500 blocks. For
instance, in case of Mode 1 data (2048 bytes per block) the buffer area for the
host is 2048x500 bytes."
In other words: Although the devices have got 2 MB Buffer area, they can only
store a maximum of 500 sectors. With a sector size of 2048 bytes (Mode 1 data)
this therefore results in a usable buffer size of 2048 times 500 = 1024000 bytes
(i.e. only 1 MB!); with audio data (sector size: 2352 Bytes) results in 500 times
2352 = 1176000 bytes (=1148 K).
Feurio!® always shows under "Extended properties" the total buffer size reported
by the device (i.e. 2 MB), under "Recorder properties" always the buffer area
given by the device as being free (and thus usable) buffer area (i.e. 1148 K).
Explanation: I presume that this is because the affected writers convert the
data BEFORE saving it in the buffer in the "lowest" CD format i.e. code it with
check sums, redundancy information, synchronizations signals etc.. In the "Raw
format" a sector takes up nearly 4K, so that this could also affect it.
