Feurio Questions & Answers - Feurio! CD-Writer general questions:
Why can't my writer overburn?

Question: I would like to "overburn", unfortunately when I try to do so, I always get an error message. Can't this be corrected in Feurio!®?

Answer:Unfortunately not. The firmware of many CD writers prevents "overburning":
The maximum play time of every CD-R is noted on it. When "overburning" now more is written on the CD than the maximum playtime given here. The reason for this can be looked up under "Overburning".
Many writers check the data coming from the program and react for example with an error message if the program tries to write in "illegal" positions.
An error message either appears directly at the stat of the recording (before starting recording a "Cue-Sheet" is sent to the writer, the "Cue-Sheet" contains the position of the individual tracks so that the writer can check if the positions are "legal") or an error message appears as soon as sectors beyond the nominal playtime are written on.
The writers in the Philips CDD36x0/HP7x00 series are particularly "mean": They "pretend" to burn the CD correctly (no error message appears). As soon as the nominal playtime has been reached however, the write laser appears to be switched off: You will find that the CD has been written only to the nominal playtime exactly, the other area is empty!

So this is not an error by Feurio!® and also not a driver problem. To enable "Overburning", the firmware of the writer has to be changed. Theoretically it would also be possible to "patch" the firmware (i.e. uninstall these checks), but I am not aware of such a patch yet.

So "Overburning" can only be achieved with new firmware!
However we would like to draw your attention to the fact that the behavior of CD writers "not capable of overburning" is actually correct. It is not an error in the firmware - the firmware is working 100% correctly. Quite the opposite: The firmware of CD writers "capable of overburning" is actually not correct as it allows access to "invalid" sectors!
