Feurio Questions & Answers - Feurio! CD-Writer
general questions:
Does Feurio!
work on notebooks?
Question: I have got a notebook and
want to burn CDs mobile. Is this possible?
Answer:
Of course - Feurio! works on notebooks, no problem.
You just have to connect the notebook up to a CD writer.
It is possible that you have to change the configuration of the "power saving
functions" - as no doubt you can all imagine, it is not particularly good if
the notebook switches off during burning (or even if only the harddisk stops),
because no key has been pressed for a while!
Connecting a CD writer to a notebook:
- Internal CD-Writer:
The "best" option is to acquire a notebook with an internal CD writer (is offered
e.g. by DELL as an option). Internal CD writers are approached via the IDE bus
and thus cause no problems.
But ask beforehand exactly WHICH CD writer is installed and make sure that the
writer is supported by Feurio! (see Feurio! Homepage: "Supported CD-Writers").
- CD-Writer connected to USB/Parallel/PCMCIA port:
See: "What about the CD writer connected to
the USB/Parallel/PCMIA port?"
- PCMCIA-SCSI cards:
A good option would be to use a "Standard" SCSI-CD-Writer (in an external SCSI
housing) in connection with a PCMCIA SCSI card.
CAUTION:
Not all PCMCIA-SCSI cards are suitable for fast CD burners. For "simple" PCMCIA
SCSI cards the same applies for ISA-SCSI-Controllers (see:
"Why shouldn't I use an ISA SCSI card?".) - They
create a high CPU load and don't make it possible to burn with a fast burner
- we already tested one card with which stable burning was only possible at 2x!
In actual fact, the PCMCIA bus is most similar to the ISA bus, so both of these
cards also come with the "ISA-SCSI card" warning!
Stable burning at high speed can only be expected of SCSI controllers which have
got a "CARDBUS" interface. "Cardbus" is an extension of the PCMCIA standard
which helps the PCMCIA port attain the performance of the PCI bus (e.g. a busmaster
transfer is also possible with CARDBUS cards).
With all modern laptops, at least one of the two PCMCIA slots is simultaneously
a "Cardbus" slot. On this, refer to the documentation provided with your notebook!
